It’s maybe stupid for you, but clearly not for everyone. For example, an AI could create the History of a planet that we do not know it even exists; meanwhile, I won’t call stupid those people interested in reading that, but currently I’ll read the History of this planet written by humans, if asked. In a nutshell, my point is there is value either way, but poems written by machines? I will leave those to scientists and scholars, at least for now.

Americans are weird. Four years ago, Trump lost the election and he was dumped from Twitter in a heartbeat. Enters Musk and buys Twitter, baptizes it as X. Somehow, Musk achieved the unachievable. No, he didn’t make Twitter profitable, he makes it even shittier. Trump gets back to X. Presidential elections happen. Trump wins in a landslide. Bluesky arises. Now Democrats have their own social media club and Republicans, conservative minds, stay in X. Really, if the USA won’t change their electoral system it could separate into two or three different countries at this point.

Except, for now, they will unite against Mexico, Iran and China.

I hope some of them come to the Fediverse. It’s nice that only the curious ones will come.

You should also take into account the animosity against lemmy.ml in general from some instances and communities. Something to do with the moderation here or something else.

For this, some people proposed to move the community from one instance to another. Now, it seems to me like the incentive to comment on instances ideologically biased for people who cares about the voting system is basically to troll the opposing instance. Which leads to this petty battle that I will ignore from now on.

EDIT: It’s also interesting to note that lemmy.ml is not like any other instance. In fact, it would be beneficial to not have big communities here. My account is here because it’s an old account, but lemmy.ml should be more like a “testing” instance, and they probably shouldn’t be signing up more people. The admins and devs acknowledge this from time to time. So, I guess everyone wins with this.

I know I can. Being blocked is something I do not have any issues with. My comment was merely my point of view. If someone is being actively bothered by the admins of the instance I’m in, it’s completely fair to block it. However, to block whole instances for ideological differences is kind of immature.

I hope people do not do that and take into account this campaign against lemmy.ml. I am aware of the accusations against the admins of this instance, but I practically never see here this kind of brigading, campaigning against whole instances like lemmy.world. Sure, I myself did make a bad comment or two about lemmy.world out of >800 comments, but that’s normal. I think the fair thing to do, is to respond in the same scale (i. e. blocking specific users) instead of going all ballistic with instance blocks.

I’d also like an option to just block/hide the instance part of user names. I don’t like what this bit of information is doing to discussions in Lemmy.

It is inherently disruptive. And “knowing” Linus, if he apologizes for the communication, it won’t come soon enough.

Ah, I see. Well, I had a discussion in that thread too and it felt off at some point. I replied about a similar crime backed by the CIA and some people accused me of whataboutism, while the other guy assumed I was denying the Tiananmen Square massacre. That was not the case.

I used to participate in a subreddit where a permanent set of people, including moderators, would downvote you to oblivion as soon as they read a divergent opinion, though, the subreddit wasn’t about a specific ideology. It wasn’t about arguments, it was systemic. They would eventually ban you if you insisted on your points of view. Both things are shitty, in my opinion, and while one is more permanent than the other, the banning felt at least more straightforward to me.

What I find excessive is the instance ban.

Well, I’m here and I don’t know what you all are talking about. And this is sincere, truly don’t understand what’s the issue, could you point me to some of these controversial situations/discussions/measures?

I have a feeling that, if you ask for any specific instance, you’ll get people complaining and blocking that instance for their own reasons. So, I’d let my users decide whether they block or not a user or a whole instance. For example, I don’t like some of the communities in lemmy.world and I complain about it because it just feels the same as being in reddit, but having access to a different point of view is very valuable to me, so I don’t block them.

I also have to add that I use lemmy with the voting system completely disabled. I hate the voting system because it shapes people’s opinions to fit in some specific communities. This is why I think blocking instances should only be used as a last resort against things like blatant spam, boycotting, CP, hate speech and the likes.
